Name: Gurley family.


Historical Note: John Ward Gurley and Henry Hosford Gurley were sons of John Gurley of Lebanon, Connecticut. John Ward Gurley (1778-1808) settled in New Orleans, became Register of Land in the Territory in 1805, and was killed in a duel with Edward Livingston in 1808. Henry Hosford Gurley (1788-1833), a lawyer, settled in Baton Rouge and was a Whig member of the United States House of Representatives (1823-1831). John Ward Gurley (b. ca. 1820) was a prominent New Orleans lawyer. R.R. Gurley, his uncle, worked for the American Colonization Society.
