Historical Note: Paul Claudel (1868-1955) was a French poet, dramatist, and diplomat. He was closely associated with the actress Eve Francis, who had been first to play the part of Sygne de Coufontaine in the play, "L'Otage." He was most famous for his verse dramas, which often convey his devout Catholicism. Claudel also had a career in the French diplomatic corps that began in 1893 and ended in 1936.
