Historical Note: The Louisiana State Council of Defense was the state branch of the Council of National Defense, a federal organization to centralize and coordinate war effort work during the First World War. It was responsible for carrying out defense plans and war-time policies authorized by the Council of National Defense in the state, such as organizing Community Councils, coordinating patriotic activities, overseeing construction projects, mobilizing manpower and collecting strategic materials. After the war, it was in charge of the demobilization and readjustment programs.
