Repository Information: The Hogan Jazz Archive is a renowned resource for New Orleans Jazz research. Women are widely represented in the Archive's recorded sound materials, photographic and film holdings, sheet music and orchestrations, manuscripts, files of clippings, oral histories and bibliographic materials. In addition to vintage and contemporary books and periodicals, the Jazz Archive's reference shelf includes discographies and encyclopedias in our patron area.

The Hogan Jazz Archive contains vertical files on individual women as well as two broader files: Women in Music (local) and Women in Music (general). Researchers may also be interested in the extensive information about male artists and music organizations, such as the Musician's Union File--AFM 174-496, as many of these files contain information relating to women. The material within the Jazz Archives is a valuable resource not only for research relating directly to music and individual people in the music world, but also for anyone doing cultural-historical research, especially research related to New Orleans heritage and African-American history. Current planning includes proposals to explore the digitisation of oral history materials to provide a web site with audio facilities and a searchable database of transcripts.

Highlights: While the Archive's strengths lie in the breadth of its collections, many notable female jazz artists are represented including Lovie Austin, Lizzie Miles, Billy Pierce, Mahalia Jackson and the Boswell Sisters.

Facilities: Multi-media consultation; reprographic services, and power sockets for laptops available. Group visits by arrangement.

Finding aids: Inventories and indexes available in reading room; some finding aids available online.

COLLECTIONS:

1. Vertical files: Women in Music (general)
1912 - present
2 folders

This file contains news clippings, pamphlets, catalogues, advertisements, reviews, scholarly articles, and other printed material relating to individual female artists and women's musical groups from a variety of genres, including jazz, ragtime, punk, techno, classical, gospel, hip hop, and many others. Collection is arranged chronologically.

2. Vertical files: Women in Music (local)
1954 - present
1 folder

Contains information relating to women in New Orleans and surrounding areas. See content description above.

3. Vertical files: Persons- miscellaneous
(size varies: typically 1-3 folders plus recordings)

The vertical files on individual people include information on the lives and careers of singers, songwriters, musicians, and other people of importance to jazz history. The files contain correspondence, newspaper clippings, press releases, articles, music criticism, and other printed material arranged chronologically. Additionally, many files include photographs, and most include music recordings (phonograph records, tape reels, recording discs, compact discs, video footage, etc.). Although no single finding aid on women artists exists, the Jazz Archives house over 200 vertical files on individual women.
