21. Griffin, Emilie

This collection contains correspondence, memoirs, scripts, published and
unpublished writing, scrapbooks, and photos of Emilie Griffin, Eula Breidenbach,
Helen Dietrich, and Lucy Russell. Griffin, a writer, and her mother, business
woman Helen Dietrich, as well as other members of the family, maintained many
long-term friendships with writers, activists, and others in New Orleans, and
these friendships are documented through letters. Especially notable are the
lengthy letters between women of different generations about their working,
religious, and family lives.

This collection highlights correspondence among writers, artists, and musicians
such as Pinkie Gordon Lane, Maxine Kumin, Gordon Lish, William Stafford and
hundreds of others, many of who are from Louisiana. The collection also contains letters,
notes, drawings and manuscripts of Grue, a poet and the founder of the Backward
Poetry, editor of The New Laurel Review, and early director of the New Orleans
Poetry Forum.

This collection contains materials relating to Barbara Hanson's case against the IRS, begun in 1975, which challenged the validity of the Louisiana Community Property Laws. The materials are mostly copies of legal documents and cases, as well as newspaper clippings, correspondence, magazine articles, and photocopied pictures.


24. Hart, Rosa
1918-1982

Rosa Hart was the director for Lake Charles Little Theatre in the late 1930s and the post-war 1940s. She became prominent through this work and in a wide variety of civic causes; the Rosa Hart Theatre in the Lake Charles Civic Center was named for her. She was also the first female cheerleader in the United States. Included in the collection are articles, books, interviews, photographs and publications that highlight these activities.


25. Irvine, Mary Ellen Hunter
1895-1988

The Mary Ellen Hunter Irvine Collection spans many years, from items belonging to Mary Irvine and her husband's families in the 1890s, to material of Mary Irvine's from the 1980s. Included are correspondence (1908-1988), mementos, scrapbooks, papers, and photographs, as well as typed and handwritten manuscripts, galleys, and other material accumulated during the publication of several of Irvine's book, and part of Irvine's cookbook and recipe collection. Also included in the collection are several pieces of Newcomb pottery, photographs, and photograph albums once owned by Sadie Irvine, Mary Irvine's sister-in-law and a Newcomb Art School faculty member. Mary Irvine's life at Newcomb College and New Orleans in the 1920s and 1930s is detailed in correspondence, mementos, papers, and a college scrapbook dating from the period. Also included is information on the practice of local schools who barred married women from teaching.

Nationally syndicated columnist and first female sportscaster in the U.S., Jill Jackson documented her life in this collection of photographs; a scrapbook (1929-1933); copies of articles written by and about her work; programs which document her acting and film career; and an oral history tape discussing her childhood in New Orleans, her years at Newcomb, and her career.


27. Kahn, Felicia

This collection contains information regarding Felicia Kahn's political activities and campaigns in New Orleans and Louisiana dating from the 1940s to the 1980s. The bulk dates from the 1960-1989. Also included is material relating to her extensive feminist activities in the New Orleans area.


28. Kohlmeyer, Eleanor

Kohlmeyer was active in the Newcomb College Mandolin and Guitar Club, the Newcomb Orchestra, and the indoor baseball team, in addition to her book binding. This collection includes photographs of the above mentioned clubs during 1923-1924. Also included are scrapbooks of student work, particularly work done for art classes and books bound at Newcomb.
