Brief Description: The collection includes correspondence, a bond of indemnity, financial records, passenger lists, Arkansas land patents, invoices for cotton bales and legal documents produced by Abraham Bell and Company. The Quaker shipping company, based in New York City, was involved in importing and exporting a variety of commodities, but cotton was its mainstay. During the potato famine of the 1840s, the company transported immigrants from Ireland to the United States, some of whose names are registered on the passenger lists in the collection.

Biographical Note for Abraham Bell and Company. : Abraham Bell and Company, a Quaker shipping company  based in New York City, was involved in importing and exporting a variety of commodities, but cotton was its mainstay. Later known as Abraham Bell and Son in 1844, the company's contacts extended as far as Dublin, Ireland, Liverpool and London, England. During the potato famine of the 1840s, the company transported immigrants from Ireland to the United States.
