[Back to Formatted Version]
Brief Description: The collection consists of letters written to Marie Raleigh by her nephew, Dieter Hankel, and other members of his family living in Berlin during the years 1931-1959. Although there was no contact during the war years (1940-1944), letters from Hankel deal with prewar Germany, his membership in the Hitler Jugend, his capture as a lieutenant in Hitler's army near the English Channel, and his subsequent stay in England as a prisoner of war. Post-war correspondence detail the severe economic plight of the family, his securing work as an English teacher, the difficult exams he passed in order to study at the Lehrerbildungsanstalt, a teacher's university in Esslinger. Letters from other members of the family also deal with economic difficulties and their appreciation for the food and clothing sent by Marie Raleigh.
