Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of papers of the Lemann family of Donaldsonville, Louisiana. In addition, there are records of the Lemann Company, B. Lemann & Brothers, and related agricultural and other businesses, including Donaldsonville Ice Company, Belle Terre Incorporated, Ascension Hook & Ladder Company, Palo Alto Company, and Hotel Donaldson Company. Materials in the collection consist of legal documents, correspondence, journals, financial statements, ledger books, invoices, contracts, tax records and receipts, laborer records, crop records, plantation store books, newspapers, handwritten genealogical tables, photographs, maps, and the diaries of Jacob Lemann (1809-1887) and his son, Bernard Lemann (1841-1899).

Biographical Note

The Lemann family moved from Newport, R.I., to Donaldsonville, Louisiana, in the 1860s, and built and operated seven sugar plantations, among other businesses, in the region. The plantations were named Palo Alto, Belle Terre, Peytavin, Dugas, Souvenir, Crescent, and Rodriguez; these flourished during the remainder of the nineteenth century.
