Biographical Note

The Westwego Canal was the center of the shrimping and boat-building industries in Westwego, Louisiana, in the early twentieth century. Flooding in 1927 caused the Army Corps of Engineers to attempt to minimize flood paths into New Orleans. After expansion of the nearby Harvey Canal, eventually the Westwego locks were condemned, the Westwego Canal became impassible, and was closed permanently in 1954.
