The collection is divided into four series: the David R. McGuire papers, the Jack B. McGuire papers, and the Jack B. McGuire collection, and the Jack B. McGuire collection of Huey P. Long papers. The David R. McGuire papers are arranged by topic, then chronologically, as follows: correspondence 1932-1960, pamphlets and political material, New Orleans annual reports and budgets 1949-1969, photographs, clippings, and writings. The Jack B. McGuire papers are arranged by topic, as follows: correspondence 1961-2004, Louisiana politics, clippings 1961-1982, writings, video and sound recordings, and plaques. The Jack B. McGuire collection is arranged by topic and is arranged as follows: Huey P. Long materials, Earl K. Scope and Contents of the Materials

David R. McGuire (1910-1960) was secretary to Representative Hale Boggs and Director of Public Relations to New Orleans Mayor deLesseps S. Morrison. His son, Jack B. McGuire, was an aide to New Orleans Mayor Victor Schiro and three years later became his public relations director from 1967 to 1970. In addition, Jack McGuire is an avid collector of Louisiana political materials.

The collection consists of the personal papers of David and Jack McGuire, including correspondence, pamphlets, New Orleans annual reports and budgets, election returns, photographs, video tapes and audio recordings, scrapbooks, manuscripts, newspaper clippings, and plaques. In addition, Jack McGuire's collection of Louisiana political materials, clippings, photographs, scrapbooks, particularly those on Huey Long, Earl Long, and Jimmie Davis, as well as manuscript materials of Pierre Soulé and Bouligny-Baldwin, are also included.

The final series, the Jack B. McGuire collection of Huey P. Long papers, consists of speech drafts; Long’s agreements with the Old Regulars political organization and Standard Oil; papers on his Share Our Wealth program; dossiers on his enemies; original illustrations for his autobiography with captions in his handwriting; documents showing that he always intended to name the Huey P. Long bridge after himself; documents relating to the Win or Lose Oil Company; campaign files; photographs of his last known public appearance, and more.

Biographical Note

Jack B. McGuire, son of David R. McGuire, was an aide to New Orleans Mayor Victor Schiro and three years later became his public relations director from 1967 to 1970. He was a paid staff member of the Goldwater campaign organization in 1964 and in 1971 was a member of the Jimmie Davis gubernatorial campaign staff in the New Orleans headquarters. He is author of Uncle Earl Deserved Better: Critical Analyses of Blaze, a Film Written and Directed by Ron Shelton, and Earl K. Long--The Saga of Uncle Earl and Louisiana Politics, by Michael L. Kurtz and Morgan Peoples, with Further Commentary on The Last of the Red-Hot Papas and co-author of the book, Louisiana Governors: Rulers, Rascals, and Reformers.
