Biographical Note

The Colcock family is an old South Carolina family of cotton planters. Charles Jones Colcock (1771-1839) was a judge of the State Court of Appeals. He had four surviving sons: Thomas Hutson Colcock (1797-1851), John Colcock (1799-1872), William Ferguson Colcock (1804-1889), and Richard Woodward Colcock (1806-1856). William Ferguson Colcock (1804-1889) was a representative in the South Carolina and the U.S. House of Representatives and was married to Sarah Huguenin and later her sister Emmeline (1819-1858). In 1853 he became collector of the Port of Charleston. His nephew, Daniel de Saussure Colcock (1846-1919), son of Richard W. Colcock, was in the Confederate Navy during the Civil War. Later, he was made Secretary of the Louisiana Sugar Exchange, representing the Louisiana sugar industry in Washington and Europe.
