Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of pages from a diary or account sheets of Jean Castel from Santo Domingo. There is correspondence between Pierre Raynal of Charleston, South Carolina and M. Goujaud, Paris. Goujaud and Dumoustier directed the office set up by the French government, 1830-1834, for the settlement of claims and indemnification of estates lost in the uprisings of Santo Domingo. In his correspondence, Raynal attempted to liquidate his claim there. Also included in the collection are genealogical notes. All original correspondence is in French, but is accompanied by xeroxes of English translations.

Biographical Note

The Raynal family lived in Charleston, South Carolina. Jean Jacques Raynal was a French colonist in Santo Domingo who had a son, Pierre B. Raynal. Pierre Raynal wanted to liquidate his claim in Santo Domingo after the uprisings there and corresponded with Goujaud and Dumoustier, the directors of the office that settled claims.
