Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of almost 4,000 color transparencies of fourteen carnival organizations from 1955 to 1972 by Emile W. Rainold, Jr. representing his work as a photographer. The crews featured include Apollo, Athenians, Atlanteans, Bacchus, Comus, Harlequins, King Parade Floats, Mystic Club, Mithras, Oberon, Osiris, Proteus, Rex, and Twelfth Night Revelers. There are also images from different krewe balls as well as slides of Carnival 1973 taken outside on Mardi Gras Day. They consist of Zulu and Rex parades, a marching club (possibly Pete Fountain's), and French Quarter street scenes (mostly female impersonators).

Biographical Note

Emile A. Rainold, Jr. (d. 1973) was a New Orleans sugar broker and photography enthusiast. He was born in New Orleans and attended Rugby High School and Tulane University. Rainold served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. For most of his career, he worked at the E.A. Rainold, Incorporated, sugar brokerage, but for the last ten years of his life, he concentrated on his hobby, photography. Rainold was also active in the Pickwick Club and several Carnival organizations. He was married to Theresa Gonsoulin Rainold and had a son, Emile A. Rainold III.
