Denègre family. | Tulane University Special Collections

Name: Denègre family.

Historical Note: The Denègre family is connected to several other families, including the Baldwin, Bayne, Gayle, and Jones families. Joseph Jones, M.D. (1833-1896) of the Jones family of Liberty County, Georgia, settled in New Orleans when he was appointed Chair of Chemistry and Clinical Medicine at the University of Louisiana (now Tulane University) after the Civil War. Thomas Bayne Denègre (1911-1915) was a grandson of Jones and attended Tulane Law School and practiced law in New Orleans. Born to Stanhope Jones (1860-1894) and Amelia "Minna" Bayne Jones (1868-1893), Denègre and his sister went to live their aunt Edith Bayne Denègre (1863-1936) upon their parents' death, taking the Denègre name in the process.
