Scope and Contents: The collection consists of correspondence, baptismal certificates, marriage contracts, passports, and other papers of the Martinstein and Durrive families of New Orleans. There is a group (1835) of letters from John H. Martinstein to his wife Emilie and her brother, Frederick Durrive, describing his travels in Bremen, Danzig, Hamburg, and other parts of Europe. A second group (1865-1867) from Robert T. Sydnor, of Richmond, Virginia, to Oscar Martinstein in New Orleans, concerns the death of Martinstein's brother, Henry, and also tells about reconstruction in Virginia. Also included are the passports and marriage contract of Frederick Durrive and his wife Marie Elodie Porche as well as the will of Zénon Porche. The baptismal certificates in the collection in the collection belong to members of the the Martinstein, Durrive, and Porche families.
